I was heading home after getting my computer repaired and was sitting at a bus stop. Two foreigners in neat, formal attire approached me and started speaking in Korean. I noticed the name tags on their chests and realized they were Mormon missionaries. Since I had to wait for the bus anyway, I decided to listen to what they had to say.

Their Korean wasn’t at a native level, so our conversation naturally became a mix of English and Korean. They told me they were from Utah, USA, and were 22 years old. I was actually a bit surprised; I had assumed they were older. Perhaps it’s because Koreans are so used to wearing sunscreen from a young age that we look younger, but I had expected them to be older than me.

I attend church myself, but their doctrine was quite new and unfamiliar to me. I asked them a few questions, but I still found the content quite difficult to follow.

Soon, my bus arrived. As I stood up, I taught them a Korean phrase: “응원해요” (Eung-won-hae-yo). I explained that it means “I support you” or “I’m rooting for you.” Then, instead of the usual “Bye,” I said “Take care,” just like I’d seen in media before, and got on the bus.

Watching them fade into the distance through the bus window, I thought about their lives. Coming all the way from Utah to Korea and approaching strangers to talk—it was quite an interesting experience, even if the doctrine was unfamiliar.

컴퓨터를 수리하고 돌아오는 길이었다. 버스 정류장 의자에 앉아 있는데, 깔끔한 복장의 외국인 두 명이 다가와 한국어로 말을 걸었다. 가슴에 달린 명찰을 보니 몰몬교 선교사들이었다. 어차피 버스를 기다려야 해서 이야기를 들어보았다.

그들의 한국어가 유창한 편은 아니라 대화는 자연스럽게 영어와 한국어를 섞어가며 진행되었다. 미국 유타주에서 왔다고 했고, 나이는 22살이라고 해서 조금 놀랐다. 한국 사람들은 어릴 때부터 선크림을 열심히 바르고 자라서 그런지, 그들도 처음엔 나보다 나이가 많을 것이라고 생각했기 때문이다.

나도 교회를 다니는 사람이지만, 그들이 설명하는 교리는 처음 들어보는 내용이 많아 꽤 생소했다. 몇 가지 질문을 해보았지만, 내게는 여전히 어렵게 느껴졌다.

얼마 지나지 않아 내가 탈 버스가 도착했다. 자리에서 일어나며 그들에게 한국어 한마디를 알려주었다. “응원해요”라는 말이 있는데, 영어로 하면 “I support you”나 “I’m rooting for you”와 같은 뜻이라고 문장으로 설명했다. 그리고 늘 쓰던 “Bye” 대신, 매체에서 봤던 “Take care”라고 인사를 건네고 버스에 올랐다.

창밖으로 그들이 멀어지는 모습을 보며 생각했다. 미국 유타주에서 여기까지 와서 낯선 이들에게 말을 걸며 지내는 생활이라니. 교리는 잘 모르겠지만, 타국에서 활동하는 모습은 꽤 특이한 경험이었다.
